Youth Aerial Classes
Where Self Expression Meets Community
Aerial Sling
Youth ages 6–15 start on the aerial Sling in our Intro to Aerial Program—our easiest and most supportive apparatus for beginners. Sling provides stability and makes learning new skills feel safe and fun.
Note: Sling (single-point, spinning, great for aerial dance) is often mistaken for Hammock (two-point, static, good for yoga). At Aerial Joy, we use Sling because it supports dynamic movement and allows for the best creative expression.
Classes meet weekly with the same instructor and group, helping students build confidence, consistency, and friendships. After about 6 months, students can advance to Sling 1 or try other apparatuses.
Lyra
Lyra (Aerial Hoop) is a sleek stainless steel circle that hangs in the air, perfect for spinning, posing, and flowing through beautiful shapes. Many moves from sling carry over, so it’s a great next step after Intro to Aerial Program.
Lyra builds strength, balance, and control—and you look amazing while doing it. The shapes are bold and eye-catching. It can feel a bit uncomfortable at first since the metal is hard, but most students adjust quickly and love the challenge.
Silks
Silks are two long pieces of fabric that hang from the ceiling, used for climbing, wrapping, and creating dramatic drops and poses. After completing Intro to Aerial, students can choose silks if they’re ready for a challenge that builds grip strength and endurance.
Silks feel graceful and flowing, and the movement can look like dancing in the air. It’s one of the most beautiful and versatile apparatuses, but also one of the hardest to learn at first. The fabric can feel tight or tricky to control, but with time, students gain strength, confidence, and impressive new skills.
